More Speed Cameras to Monitor Muscogee County School Zones

Columbus City Council has approved the installation of 20 additional traffic cameras in school zones throughout Muscogee County. These new cameras, set to be operational by August, aim to enhance student safety near elementary and middle public schools. Three cameras are already active in private school zones, with more planned for the future. The cameras will function an hour before and after school, capturing images of speeding vehicles, which will then be reviewed for citations by the Columbus Police Department.

The project is a collaboration between the Columbus Police Department and the Muscogee County Sheriff’s Office, with a portion of collected fines allocated to law enforcement and the school district. While public school zone revenues will primarily support public safety departments, private school zone camera fines will benefit the Muscogee County Sheriff’s Office. This initiative is part of a broader effort to enhance road safety and reduce speeding in school zones.
